Claims come into picture when there is some kind of loss and you need funds to keep up with your life. However, insurance companies don’t always approve your claims application. If you happen to face a rejection, it is not the end of the road. You can still think of ways to get the claims settled.
Here’s what you can do to stand a better chance of getting approved:
Find The Root Cause Of Rejection
When an insurance claim has been rejected, the insurance company has to provide a letter stating the reason for rejection. If you cannot make out what the letter meant, take it to your insurance agent and understand the reason clearly. Check if the reason stated is valid as per the statements in the policy document. Also, ask the agent if he/she can help you.
If the agent could not be of much help, then you must visit the claims department of your insurer’s branch office for further clarification on the matter. Ask the staff if you must provide any other documents so that the claim application can be processed.
Is It Possible To Approach Again
Check with your agent or the insurer if you can appeal the claim again. In cases where you have made small mistakes while filling out the claims form, there is still hope. Or, if the company has rejected your application on wrong grounds, you can fight for your rights. So, compare the contents of the letter stating the reason for rejection and the policy document to find a strong factor that can fetch you the claims.
If things are not simple and if you think it cannot be solved by approaching the insurance company, you must take it to the next level.
Talk To Dispute-Resolving Organisations
If the earlier two approaches don’t work, it is time for you to talk to one of the following organisations and seek their help.
Persuan Insurans Am Malaysia (PIAM): PIAM is an association of all general insurance companies in Malaysia. You can approach this firm when there are issues related to general insurance, takaful, motor insurance related to accident or theft.
Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM): BNM is the central bank of Malaysia and provides dispute resolution services on banking and insurance-related matters. It offers two platforms namely BNMLINK and BNMTELELINK. The bank responds to customers’ queries within 5 days.
Ombudsman Financial Services: Ombudsman Financial Services is a subsidiary of BNM and is a non-profit organisation dedicated to complaints and dispute resolution services between customers and local banks, insurance companies and takaful companies.
When you are approaching these firms to dispute the claim rejection, you need to be aware of the underlying terms & conditions. Sometimes, you may be required to file a complaint within 6 months from the date of receiving the claim rejection letter from the insurance company.
Approach The Court
If you are not satisfied with the dispute resolution from the firms listed above, the final option you have is to take the matter to court. You can appoint a lawyer to present your case to the court. But, make sure that you have strong evidence that you are wrongly denied by the company. Also, make sure that your lawyer has enough experience and is capable to deal with your case. Otherwise, you will end up spending on something that does not grant you justice.
Claim rejection does not mean that you have to be disappointed. There are still a few ways you can try. But, every time you’re forced to take the next step, you need to make sure that your argument is stronger and more valid.
If you make a weak argument moving further on the ladder, you will definitely be rejected. So, get all the documentation in place before fighting for your rights.
